Charlie Kirk, the Church, and the Call to Courage

This past week has been a roller coaster of emotions. I’ve been uplifted by many voices who have testified to the amazing, God glorifying life of the man, Charlie Kirk. Many people went to church for the first time ever, some for the first time in a while. Others just started watching some of his debates, gaining a different perspective than the narrative that has been fed to them.

And then I have been saddened, frustrated, and angry at others who have disparaged this man’s name based on not being able to deal with a seasoned conservative debater who actually stood on Biblical Truth and values. I realize sinners are going to sin. But the outrageous disrespect and demonic levels of hatred that has been on full display has been quite shocking.

It gets worse

But you know what the worst has been? The worst has been noticing the ho hum reaction by some professing Christian churches. Many just briefly mentioned a man who was murdered in front of people. Which, insanely, is better than others who couldn’t muster the decency to mention his name. A fellow brother in Christ who fought in the cultural equivalent of the gladiator games day in and day out – and was making a difference. But nope. Can’t talk about him. He’s just too… political, MAGA, divisive, etc.

Granted, I can only see things from my little fish bowl. There’s a great big world out there, and lots and lots of people. I can’t say that I read everyone’s reactions and as far as I know, there is no compilation of Christian reactions to Charlie Kirk’s assassination/martyrdom. But still, I am sad and disappointed (to put it mildly).

Reminds me of something

Of course, this all brought to mind 2020. The reactions of many in the church were similar to the reactions of Kirk’s murder. I know that the main issue was (and is) that churches didn’t want to ruin their testimony in 2020 (or now). And they want to share the gospel. So they go along to get along. They say nothing to tick anyone off (i.e. they don’t say anything about anything important/significant). They don’t want to make a fuss. “Don’t stick out, blend in” is the mantra. They claim they only want to be about Jesus.

I believe them. But you know what they say about good intentions – the road to hell is paved with them. Or as Aldous Huxley stated: ‘Hell isn’t merely paved with good intentions; it’s walled and roofed with them. Yes, and furnished too.’ Jesus said he came to bring a sword of division (Matthew 10:34-36). Being in the mushy middle at this point is frankly cowardice. It reminds me of lukewarm water (Revelation 3:16), don’t you think?

Or perhaps, the church doesn’t want to seem too political. Since, you know, that’s gross. Clearly, these churches are way too pious for that. Or maybe they just want to be nice and want to be known as the nice people church! Never polarizing. Haven’t you heard about the 11th commandment? Thou shalt be nice. It’s there, somewhere… or so I’m told.

Comparison

Comparison has been given a bad rap. The people who hated Charlie Kirk would debate him, and found their own arguments to be weak and wanting by the time he was through. What they did with that is get angry, and scream FOUL! Not fair! He’s a liar! But there’s another way to react when comparing, and it’s actually quite a good thing. We can learn from the other person, and see how we may be able to emulate the best parts of that person’s character. We have a choice. And the Kirk haters chose to do what came easy and felt good, rather than what was right.

The same can be said about the church. Although far too many churches want to double down with what is essentially “third way-ism” (i.e. that mushy middle), we need to learn from our past mistakes and move forward with faith and conviction, just like Charlie did.

The church has real enemies, whether we admit it or not. And no matter how nice we are, it won’t matter. The hate is no longer hidden, it’s completely out in the open in the hopes that we will all cower in fear. If they would have the audacity to mock a grieving wife and cheer about the death of an innocent man like Kirk, you know they’d be more than thrilled to see the same thing happen to those of us who have similar, if not exactly the same, beliefs and convictions.

Straight Biblical convictions

Kirk didn’t have wild beliefs. He wasn’t far right at all. He was conservative, pure and simple. His convictions were pretty standard, up until 5 minutes ago. But see, that’s what made him such a problem. And that’s what makes all of US such a problem too.

I pray that the church wakes up to the fact that the enemy is at the door, and he is prowling around like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8). He’s waiting to tear us apart. The church doesn’t have the luxury anymore to play the middle. It never was supposed to, but especially not now.

I find comfort in knowing that at the time we need Him, the LORD will give us the words to speak (Luke 12:12). But with that in mind, we must also prepare ourselves to be able to give an answer (1 Peter 3:15). We must pray and seek the LORD’s face in His Word, and we must educate ourselves to answer people’s questions. Both are of paramount importance.

More like Jesus

LORD Jesus, we need You now. Instill in us compassion and wisdom as well as courage and a love of truth. LORD, Charlie was a flawed, but incredible man, who was empowered and enabled by Your Spirit. Fill us with that same Spirit, and make us more like You.
