Finding courage in unlikely people

Graham Linehan

I’ve been thinking a lot about an Irish comedian this week, Graham Linehan. He’s crass and doesn’t have a heart for Christ, but he has courage. He is standing on Truth and common sense, even when it has cost him just about everything. And we Christians can learn a lot from this middle-aged, out of shape man from across the pond.

He used to be a popular comedic writer. He had everything going for him. But Linehan decided to speak truth, and wow did the elites go after him. He lost his job, he lost his marriage, and he lost his livelihood. And what was his great sin? He spoke out against men being in women’s spaces in the UK. That’s it.

Joe Rogan

I first heard about him on the Joe Rogan show. These two men talked about the seething anger of the trans-activists, and how it has affected Linehan’s life. They were cussing away and certainly not displaying anything specifically holy or godly. But if I were ever in trouble with the crazy Leftists, I would assume these men would stand with me any day over many of the “godly” and “holy people” that fill the churches in this country.

The church

Now that may sound harsh, but let me explain. I am so thankful the church preaches the gospel. That it recognizes we are sinners in need of a Savior. And that Christ is not only our Savior, but our LORD. Once we give our lives to Christ, we can live in the freedom that He gives us through His sacrifice on the cross. That is obviously of upmost importance and is all we really need to know on a foundational level.

However, once we give our lives to Christ, we still live on this earth. If we were taken up to be in glory with Jesus as soon as we professed Him as LORD and Savior, that would be one thing. But that doesn’t happen (in general). And that leads me to believe, there’s something more to this life than just believing in Christ. Out of our faith, we are to point others to Christ. We are to be the aroma of heaven on this earth, for His glory and our good.

For example, Wilberforce was a fierce advocate against slavery. He loved the LORD and preached the gospel through what he did to protect the most marginalized and weak in his culture during the time he lived. Yes, absolutely, the gospel must be preached. But it must also be lived out, much like we’ve seen the giants of the Church have done in the past.

All truth is God’s truth

As we all know, all truth is God’s truth. And since we’re all made in the image of God, we can all display aspects of God, whether we believe in Him or not. I think that Mr. Linehan has done just that. He is standing on Truth with courage and conviction. He may not be doing it in the most gracious and God-glorifying way, but nevertheless, he is exemplifying strength like few in the church have done.

When I heard that this man was arrested for a tweet that he made while in the United States, I couldn’t believe it. Five armed police officers came to arrest him as he came off the plane in the UK. Now remember, Britain has a LOT of other issues going on. A middle aged comedian with a few snarky tweets shouldn’t be a concern of theirs. But he was. Apparently, he was shockingly disobedient, and not toting the line. How dare he? So what if British girls are terrified for their lives, and therefore walk around armed? What does that matter? HE OFFENDED SOMEONE!

Who are we afraid of?

I just can’t. We are so afraid to offend someone, really anyone. But we forget by not offending anyone, we may very well be offending the LORD of the Universe. I think that’s just a touch more important. For Linehan, he doesn’t recognize our LORD, but he DOES recognize nature and what is good, beautiful, and true. And he won’t back down. Man, can we learn from him.

I also could not believe that after his arrest, he came to court with a sign that said: “There’s no such thing as a trans child” and “Keep men out of women’s sports.” What courage and conviction! In this insane world we live in, those words were offensive. Again, the tweet he wrote was a bit crass, but still. It was also 100% true.

And then I thought, where are the Christian men of Britain? Why are they not standing with this man, sharing the arrows ready and willing to protect women? Yes, they will offend some people. But my word. That was not why we were put on this earth. As I said at the beginning of this post, we are to be the aroma of heaven while we’re here. In heaven, there is no confusion. We would never question the goodness of God’s creation, and would fully defend it just the way He made it.

My heart hurts over the fear and frankly, weakness, we have right now within the church. I’m not saying we need to go around all day long like Billboard Chris (which, sidenote, he is also not a Believer). But when we need to speak and/or stand firm, we must.

Ezekiel

I’m currently reading Ezekiel. I recently told my oldest daughter, “I’m so, so glad I wasn’t a prophet back then.” He had it seriously rough. In Ezekiel 33, God tells him he is called to be a watchman. His responsibility is to do what God tells him to do. Others have a choice to listen or not, and they will have to deal with the consequences of their choices. But if those people aren’t warned of the impending judgment of God by Ezekiel, not only those people will be judged by their sin, but Ezekiel would also be held accountable.

We’re Ezekiel’s in this moment in time. If we don’t speak, who will? Should we just keep quiet for the sake of peace? Obviously, we should always pray for wisdom for what to do or say, and when. But when people are criticized for speaking truth, whether they are Believers or not, we should support them however we can. Even if it means just talking about it in some way.

Alisa Childers has a fantastic book that covers these topics, “Live Your Truth and Other Lies” as well as Rosaria Butterfield – Five Lies of our Anti-Christian Age. We also have an awesome book bundle: Equipping men and women for such a time as this. We can find strength in God’s Word and in those who have gone before us. We must learn to be courageous. And just FYI, I’m speaking to myself just as much as to anyone reading this.
