More about Mud Hen Mama

Mud Hen is the nickname of a unique bird also known as the American Coot. Now why in the world would a business name themselves after this bird, which, by the way, has some seriously unusual toes (three to be exact – the Coot looks like a duck, but no webbed feet!)? Well, I was racking my head for days trying to find a good name for this business idea that I had. Something that represented why I wanted to start it in the first place. Against the Grain, Standing Firm, Countercultural Truth – all were taken or just didn’t have the right feel to them. For some reason, I remembered I had this set of books that are called, “Character Sketches from the pages of Scripture, illustrated in the world of nature”. Back when I homeschooled, I thought this was going to be a great resource. Unfortunately, I never got to use them since my homeschooling days lasted all of a year and a half. But I kept the books anyway, thinking that one day maybe they’d come in handy.

I was looking through the different animals and their characteristics when I came across the American Coot. This bird was listed under “Endurance”, which it demonstrates by uniting together with other Coots when it feels threatened. Well, that was pretty much exactly what I was trying to do with this business – to collectively stand firm against our culture which is constantly pushing against biblical truths. A place where like-minded people can find resources for their family to help them establish foundational biblical truths in their children. What better way than through books?

Since I’m a mom of 10 children (and one son-in-law!), I want our children to have firm convictions that are based on Biblical truths, and I know I’m not alone. But to be honest, it can sometimes feel as if we ARE alone with all that is reported through social media and the news. I get it. And that’s why Mud Hen Mama (MHM) was created. For people who want to have great books that support their values and establish those convictions in their children.
