When nothing makes sense, is God still good?

I’m still reeling about Charlie Kirk. Right now, I’m mostly heartbroken. But the anger is also there. How could this have happened? And why? Father God, why? And his beautiful daughter. A precious little 3 year old who some say (mostly posts on FB, but I couldn’t find any articles that support this assertion) got scared when she heard the shot and started to run towards her father. It makes me physically ill that this could have happened.

I don’t understand a lot of things, and this one is right up there. I still can’t wrap my brain around it. He was a good man. I keep hearing person after person sharing how Charlie touched so many people’s lives. We need his courage and conviction in this generation. So why would the LORD take him now?

Nabeel

This made me think about Nabeel Qureshi. Nabeel wasn’t nearly as famous and influential, but he was most definitely on his way to becoming a big voice in the Evangelical movement. He was incredibly smart, charismatic, and a former Muslim. His testimony was absolutely amazing.

But one day, he found that he could barely eat anymore. He didn’t understand why, so he went to the doctor. They told Nabeel the devastating news that he had an aggressive form of stomach cancer, and he only had months to live.

He had been married to his wife only a few years. They had a one year old little girl. He had a bright future, only to be snuffed out by cancer. He prayed and prayed. We all did. But as he prayed, he kept trusting in Jesus. It was so heartbreaking and beautiful. Whenever I think about his life, my heart hurts. This feels so similar.

So many questions

I hate when I question God. But to be honest, I question Him more often than I’d like to admit. Our world is so screwed up. There’s Charlie Kirk, then there’s that beautiful young Ukrainian woman mercilessly killed. Children being shot by other children in Colorado, and of course Chicago shootings on the regular (this particular article suggests just 7 killed this weekend is actually not that bad!). Again, that’s just this past week. My heart cries out at all of the injustice and brokenness in the world. We’re such an incredible awful mess.

We say it often. God is good, all the time. And all the time, God is good. But if I’m being honest, right now, it sure doesn’t feel or seem like God is good. But I also know that right now is the precise time for us to say it and recall the fact that He is in charge. He knows. And despite what it looks like, He loves Charlie. God loves Nabeel. He loves each one of us. And He truly is good.

We don’t have His perspective. We don’t see how everything works together. Although it may look like our world seems recklessly out of control, God is sovereign and we can trust He knows what He’s doing.

The demons may be cheering, but…

Admittedly, it all seems so senseless. To make it worse, we know that the demons are gleefully celebrating this victory. But at the end of the day, we must all be reminded that when we leave this earth, we should all want Satan’s demons to breath a sigh of relief and be thankful we’re out of here. Because most importantly of all, we want to hear our Father in heaven say to us, “Well done, good and faithful servant” as I’m certain Nabeel and Charlie have already heard. Satan and his minions may cheer for a moment in this battle, but God has already won the war. We get to cheer for eternity with our Savior.

I may not understand everything and why things have happened as they have. But I do know one thing right now. We need to stand boldly for Christ and for Truth. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).

Charlie may have been taken away from us, but our God still reigns. And we must fight as the LORD has called us to, with courage and conviction. All the more, as we see the day approaching (Hebrews 10:25). And approaching it most certainly is.

I’m so thankful for Charlie Kirk’s life. He may have only lived 31 years, but he lived more in that time than most people. I just met a woman that had two grandchildren she was caring for during the day. She told me, “Well their parents better not have any more children! I want to enjoy my retirement.” There’s a lot there, but wow, we are so entitled and obsessed with comfort and ease. LORD, help us to be more like Charlie – embracing life, despite the difficulties. Let us face them with courage and truth, rather than looking for the easy off ramp. That woman was easily in her 60’s, but I know her life was not half as full as Charlie’s was.

Charlie’s books

I didn’t have any of Charlie Kirk’s books on the site before. I thought he was a little too political. But now I realize, that was never the case. Charlie just lived out the gospel in the political arena. He talked about his faith to others and lived it. I’m so thankful that one day, I’ll be able to meet this great young man in heaven. Until then, I pray he’s not just resting in peace, but also fully praising God in jubilation with all of the other saints who have gone before him. He’s in a better place. This world truly wasn’t worthy of him.

Pray for his wife. Pray for his precious children. Oh LORD, provide for their every need. And give us strength. Root out any cowardice that lingers in us, and replace it with boldness for Your Word and Your truth.
