Below is a quick review of the first book in The Mysterious Benedict Society series. Our 13 year old really enjoyed the first book and was quickly on to the next one! Check it out!
The Mysterious Benedict Society is a great book for kids of all ages. It has riddles and suspense and great lessons about friendship and working together. This story is about four extraordinary children who see an advertisement titled “ARE YOU A GIFTED CHILD LOOKING FOR SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES?” These four children are named Kate Weatherall, George ‘Sticky’ Washington, Constance Contraire, and Reynie Muldoon. When they see this advertisement in the newspaper, they decide to go and see what it’s all about. They take a test along with many other children hoping to be given the special opportunities, but only the four of them pass.
From there they were taken to a house by two characters named Rhonda Kazembe and Number Two to take another series of tests, and again, they all passed. They then meet a man named Mr. Benedict, who has narcolepsy which causes him to fall asleep at times when he is feeling especially strong emotion. This man tells them that something awful is coming, but that he doesn’t know what. That’s what he needs them for. They would be his secret spies in a place called the Institute and they would find out what is coming.
This book is one of my favorites and I know I will read it again. It tests me along with the characters which makes it more enjoyable. It has great lessons in it about trust, friendship and more. One example of this is when Sticky got in trouble but he trusted his friends to come up with a story to keep them from getting caught. All of the children were there for each other and helped one another when they were in tough spots. Overall, this is a great book that I am glad I read and am excited to read the second.
