This past weekend, our oldest child was married. It was beyond surreal. Even though we had plenty of time to prepare, I still didn’t feel like I was fully prepared for watching our daughter walk down that aisle with her father (it doesn’t seem long ago when we were up there doing the same thing!). But then again, I don’t know if you really can ever feel prepared for your first-born to be married.
My baby
That young lady was the first one I felt kick in my womb. The first to make me feel a love so strong I would without hesitation die for. Our very own crash test dummy, who taught us just as much as we taught her, as we learned to be parents.
I was honored to be a part of the beautiful ceremony and celebration. I was and am so happy-sad. Such conflicting feelings, but at the end of the day, so much joy.
A godly husband
We are so thankful that our daughter found a young man that loves the LORD. That was a non-negotiable, praise God, for her. He is a good man that is striving to live in a way that honors God. And he has promised to faithfully care for and protect our daughter. What more can we ask for as her parents?
We are blessed beyond belief. We were able to witness what the LORD intended when he first created Adam and Eve. The joining of a man and a woman in holy matrimony is truly a beautiful and good thing. In this day where the definition of marriage has become so convoluted and twisted, the clarity of what the Word of God communicates is refreshing and stabilizing.
God’s definition of marriage
Our selfishness and sinfulness often lead us to question what Eve did all those thousands of years ago – Did God really say? For the sake of comfort or ease or pride, we all, at one time or another, have wanted to bend the Word of God to our will, rather than the other way around. It’s so easy to do. Believe me, I know.
But God in His mercy allows us to see glimpses of beauty and truth, even in a practice as commonplace and ancient as the tradition of marriage. For thousands of years, a man and a woman have been joined together in matrimony. Clearly, there have been some really awful exceptions throughout history, but what has maintained our civilization and culture are stable, loving homes that raise strong families. Praise the LORD for biblical marriage.
Truth of Scripture
I pray we continue to turn to the Truth of Scripture to understand and embrace the basic definitions that God has set in place. Since the LORD created everything, He gets to define them too, no? Such things as what is a man, or a woman, or a marriage, to just name a few.
For a sweet book about marriage for children, I would definitely recommend “A Child’s First Book About Marriage” to explain to your child what marriage is, as well as why it’s so important – all from a biblical worldview.
Merry Christmas everyone!
